Honors Faculty Holly Donahue Singh

Global Health | Culture | Anthropology

Dr. Holly Donahue Singh is a full-time instructor in the Judy Genshaft Honors College, where she primarily teaches courses in the social and behavioral sciences. She joined the college in 2017 and brings a deep background in anthropology, global health, and cultural studies to her teaching and research.

Academic Background

Dr. Singh earned her A.B. in religious studies with a concentration in Asian studies from Kenyon College, followed by an M.A. and PhD in anthropology from the University of Virginia. As an undergraduate, she studied abroad in India and traveled in Thailand and the United Kingdom — experiences that continue to shape her academic and professional focus. Since then, she has spent over four years in India for research and study.

She has held prestigious graduate research fellowships through the Fulbright U.S. Student Program, the American Institute of Indian Studies, and the U.S. Department of Education’s Foreign Language and Area Studies Program. She also completed postdoctoral fellowships at the University of Michigan and Bowdoin College.

Research Focus

Dr. Singh’s scholarship is grounded in long-term anthropological fieldwork in northern India. Her research centers on women’s perspectives on reproduction, kinship, and health, with broader attention to how people navigate these issues within complex social and cultural systems.

Her book, "Infertility in a Crowded Country: Hiding Reproduction in India," was published by Indiana University Press in 2022. Her scholarly work appears in journals such as Medical Anthropology Quarterly, Anthropology & Humanism, and American Anthropologist. She has also translated literary works and contributed to public-facing publications, including the foreword to "How May I Help You? An Immigrant’s Journey from MBA to Minimum Wage" (University of California Press, 2017).

Teaching at USF

At the Judy Genshaft Honors College, Dr. Singh teaches interdisciplinary courses that explore global health and culture through ethnographic texts, film, literature, and media. Her classes emphasize critical analysis and hands-on learning through research, writing, media production, and community engagement.

Favorite courses include:

  • Fertility and the Future: A cross-cultural exploration of human reproduction, population debates, childbirth, and infant feeding.
  • Histories of Healing in South Asia: A study of diverse approaches to health and illness across South Asian cultural and religious contexts.
  • Masculinities, Health, and (Dis)Order: A global look at how gender, health, and violence intersect.

Creative and Student-Centered Learning
