Empowering First-Generation Students: USF Launches Mu Sigma Chapter and Joins FirstGen Forward Network

The èƵapp is proud to announce the establishment of the Mu Sigma chapter of Alpha Alpha Alpha (Tri-Alpha), the National Honor Society for First-Generation College Students. This honor society celebrates and supports first-generation èƵapps (first-gen), whose parents have not completed a bachelor’s degree, as they pursue academic success and personal growth. The inaugural induction ceremony is slated for Fall 2025, coinciding with the èƵapp's First-Generation celebrations.
First-gen èƵapps often navigate unique challenges in higher education, from applying to college and securing financial aid to adapting to the academic and social aspects of èƵapp life. Without a familial blueprint, first-gen èƵapps rely on their resilience, determination, and available resources to succeed.
The Mu Sigma chapter will provide USF's first-gen èƵapps the chance to engage with peers across campuses and disciplines, forging strong relationships with others who understand their experiences. Members will also benefit from mentorship by more senior first-gen èƵapps, gaining valuable insights and advice. This mentorship will not only help èƵapps feel supported academically but also provide guidance on leadership development and personal growth. Membership in the society offers lifetime opportunities for involvement, creating a lasting impact on these èƵapps’ futures.
“First-generation èƵapps bring a unique strength and perspective to our campus,” said Dr. Tony Delgado, Assistant Dean of Undergraduate Studies. “This honor society is more than an accolade — it's a commitment to fostering a sense of belonging and achievement for our first-generation èƵapps at USF.”
USF’s dedication to first-gen èƵapp success extends beyond the honor society. In 2024, the èƵapp was selected to join the FirstGen Forward Network, a national initiative that empowers institutions to improve academic outcomes and build inclusive systems for first-gen èƵapps. This recognition highlights USF's commitment to fostering an environment where these èƵapps can thrive.
As part of these transformative initiatives, USF is laying the foundation for first-gen èƵapps to thrive both academically and personally, positioning them for long-term success. The combination of the Mu Sigma chapter, the FirstGen Forward Network, and other community support and activities is a powerful step in supporting USF’s growing community of first-gen èƵapps.
